Côte-Rôtie Les Grandes Places - Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin 2105
The estate
The Gerin family has been established in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie vineyard, in the village of Ampuis, for 6 generations. This vineyard, located 30 km south of Lyon, is the northernmost appellation of the Rhône Valley and also one of the smallest, covering only about 320 hectares.
The influence of the Mediterranean and continental climates gives wines that are both tannic, powerful, silky, and elegant. The king grape variety, "Syrah", is sometimes blended with Viognier to bring more finesse to the wines.
The story begins with the purchase of a plot in Côte-Rôtie, symbolizing the creation of Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin, established in 1983. It was then in 1987 that the first bottle was born, thanks to the takeover of the family estate (the vines of Marcel Gerin and Alfred Gerin, grandfather and father). It continued in 1988, with the first separate vinification of the place called "Les Grandes Places", followed in 1996 by "La Landonne". In early 1990, the construction of a fermentation cellar and a barrel aging cellar became necessary. The bottle storage was built in 2000.
The planting of the place called "La Viallière" began in 2003, on the lands of Côte-Rôtie. A titanic effort on slopes ranging from 40% to almost 60%. The 2009 vintage will finally see the first bottles expressed. The new winemaking facility was built in 2014. In 2018, the place called Côte-Bodin was vinified separately for the first time. Planted 30 years ago by Jean-Michel, this exceptional terroir of Côte-Rôtie will be able to express itself.
In 2020, the decision was made to convert the entire estate to organic farming, and we have been certified since the 2023 vintage. Today, Michaël and Alexis Gerin manage the estate, which spans nearly 20 hectares.
