Monfortino Barolo Riserva - Giacomo Conterno 2015
The estate
Giacomo Conterno is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of Barolo. Although its winemaking roots date back to the 18th century, the family only began producing Barolo in 1908, while running a tavern in San Giuseppe, near Monforte d'Alba. In the 1920s, it was among the first producers to bottle Barolo when it was marketed in barrels and demijohns. In the 1930s, the winery initiated the production of Barolo Monfortino, which had an extremely long aging potential. The winery then produced a Barolo and a Barolo Riserva in 1954, before the family business was taken over in 1961 by the two sons Giovanni and Aldo. While the latter did not share the purely traditionalist philosophy of the house, he created his own estate in 1969 (Poderi Aldo Conterno). The purchase of the Cascina Francia vineyards in 1974 marked the end of buying grapes, leading to the launch in 1980 of the first vintage made from grapes grown by the estate, under the Barolo Cascina Francia label. Bottles bearing the name Giacomo Conterno embody the ultimate expression of Barolo in all its purity. These are rich, powerful, structured wines with significant aging potential.
This wine is only produced in exceptional years. In recent vintages, it was not produced in 2012, 2011, 2009, 2007, or 2003.
