Saint-Estèphe - Château Calon Ségur 2017

The domain

Located just north of Saint-Estèphe, Château Calon-Ségur is one of the historic properties of the Médoc (the Marquis de Ségur also owned Château Lafite and Latour). Carried to its best level by the Capbern-Gasqueton family, owners for more than a century, Calon-Ségur today belongs to the Suravenir insurance group. Its new director, Vincent Millet, from Château Margaux, has the mission of leading the cru towards increasing quality through blends more marked by Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines appear to be among the most racy and regular in the Médoc.
Even today, the 55 hectares of the Calon Ségur vineyard are closed to the south by a thick stone wall erected at the time of the Marquis, forming a closed area, a fact rare enough in Médoc to be noted. Located at the extreme north of Saint-Estèphe, the vines rest on soil made up of gravel on the surface and a clay basement.
