Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru - Le Grand Maupertui - Domaine Anne Gros 2004

The domain

The Domaine Anne Gros is a wine producer based in the village of Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. The estate produces a range of wines from local and neighboring appellations through the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties.

The estate has a total of 6.5 hectares spread over nine appellations, including parcels in the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux and Richebourg. Anne Gros also produces Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny village wines, as well as generic Burgundy red and Burgundy white wines.

The vines are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics. The red grapes are vinified in cement vats coated with epoxy, the whites in stainless steel.

Aging in barrels generally lasts about 16 months with 80% new oak for the grands crus, 50% for village wines and 30% for regional wines. The Bourgogne blanc is aged for 12 months in large oak barrels (500 litres), of which around 3% are new oak.

Anne Gros is part of a large family of winemakers in the region and joined her father François at the family estate in 1988. The estate was named Domaine Anne et François Gros until 1995 and is now simply Domaine Anne Gros.

The Great Maupertui

This single block plot of 94 ares planted in 1904 and purchased in 1920 by Jules Gros was bequeathed by Louis Gros to his son François. The regularity of the transplants actually gives an average age of the plot of about 70 years.

Located just under the Grands Echezeaux at a place called "Le Grand Maupertui", we would like to pay tribute to the work of the monks of Cîteaux by indicating it on our label.

The etymology may come from "pertus" in Latin. Not that we think that there was a well at this location but rather that it is the expression of a slight hollow in the landscape located in the width of the dejection cone of the combe d' Orveau.

Members at the beginning of the creation of the GEST (Groupement d’Etude et Suivi des Terroirs) we were able to observe the presence of deep clay soil, with variable grain size, before finding the decomposed rocks.

The plot is slightly sloping and offers excellent natural drainage. The surrounding wall of the Clos protects it from slow but certain erosion because you can already see a drop of about 1.50m between the road linking Vosne-Romanée to the Château du Clos-Vougeot and the outline of the vines.

Format : 75cl

 Country: France

Region: Burgundy

Organic Agriculture

Grape: Pinot Noir

Tasting: A powerful, beautifully constructed wine, where everything is in place: fruit, tannins and smoky wood. This justifies the sometimes questionable place of Clos Vougeot among the Grands Crus.
