Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru - Lucien Le Moine 2008

The domain

Lucien Le Moine is a small trading house on the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy. Founded in 1999, it produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay throughout the Côte d'Or, from village-level, premier cru and grand cru vineyards.

Le Moine produces wine from several grand cru sites, including Bonnes-Mares, Le Montrachet, Echezeaux and Richebourg. As well as some of Burgundy's most famous premier crus, such as Les Amoureuses. The vineyards from which Le Moine receives the grapes are among the most sought after in Burgundy.

Several village wines are also included in the portfolio, as well as generic Burgundy Red and White offerings. Constantly reassessing its sources, Lucien Le Moine's production fluctuates a lot and never exceeds 100 barrels or around 30,000 bottles. Cellar space being limited, some vintages can be made up of a single barrel and only give rise to 300 bottles.

Lucien Le Moine focuses on the aging period of winemaking. The wines are aged on their lees and the malolactic fermentation is postponed as long as possible in order to produce more supple and less sulphite wines. Depending on the vintage, batonnage is used to maximize contact with the lees.

Lucien Le Moine uses 100% new oak from the Jupilles forest in northwestern France. The wines are bottled directly in barrels, without blending, fining or filtering.
