Pauillac - Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1983

The Estate

The Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the three first growths located in the commune of Pauillac. It produces one of the most prestigious Bordeaux wines, which bears the same name. It shares this rare distinction with Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and Château Haut-Brion.

Mouton-Rothschild has been owned by the English branch of the Rothschild family since 1853. It is the only estate that was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973 by the Ministry of Agriculture. Following this, the estate's motto was changed from "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis" to "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

In 1922, the young Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the estate. A pioneer, he decided in 1924 to carry out the bottling entirely on the property, whereas at the time, wine was sold in bulk to various merchants in the Bordeaux area who handled the bottling themselves. He also asked the illustrator Carlu to create a label for his wine.

Tasting: this is an underrated vintage for Mouton. It releases lovely aromas of sweet Thai basil mixed with notes of Asian plums. It is ample, supple, and fruity. One could almost describe it as jammy, but it also possesses exceptional roundness and beauty.
