Richebourg Grand Cru - Domaine Anne Gros 2002

The domain

The Domaine Anne Gros is a wine producer based in the village of Vosne-Romanée, in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. The estate produces a range of wines from local and neighboring appellations through the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties.

The estate has a total of 6.5 hectares spread over nine appellations, including parcels in the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos Vougeot, Echezeaux and Richebourg. Anne Gros also produces Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny village wines, as well as generic Burgundy red and Burgundy white wines.

The vines are cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics. The red grapes are vinified in cement vats coated with epoxy, the whites in stainless steel.

Aging in barrels generally lasts about 16 months with 80% new oak for the grands crus, 50% for village wines and 30% for regional wines. The Bourgogne blanc is aged for 12 months in large oak barrels (500 litres), of which around 3% are new oak.

Anne Gros is part of a large family of winemakers in the region and joined her father François at the family estate in 1988. The estate was named Domaine Anne et François Gros until 1995 and is now simply Domaine Anne Gros.

Richebourg Grand Cru

East-facing, it is a plot of 0 ha 60 in the place called “Les Verroilles” bought in 1882 by Louis Gustave Gros. Part of the vines are over 75 years old and the other part about 50 years old.

The soil is brown with a good proportion of limestone pebbles, moreover a dry stone wall is built within our plot with local stones and forms a small terrace delimiting the 2 ages of the vines.

Richebourg is phonetically a name that evokes wealth, even a certain heaviness... which sometimes leads to confusion in some minds. It is actually an extremely refined and extraordinary wine to combine power and supreme elegance.

We often refer to it as a peacock tail. The silky and velvety tannins, combined with a minerality that gives it its “spring”, make this grand cru a most sensual and complex wine.

Its aromas are floral (peonies, old roses, violets…), spicy (licorice, vanilla, coriander…), fruity (raspberry, blackcurrant…), vegetal (undergrowth, menthol, tobacco, hay…), oriental (leather, musk…), pastry chefs (caramel, chocolate, toffee…).

You should never complicate a dish to find the best pairings. The simplicity of the combination of flavors gives the best result. It goes well with red and white meats, roast game with thyme, bay leaf and candied onions, mushrooms (morels, truffles, ceps, etc.). The choice and dosage of spices form magical alliances. Ageing: in barrels (30% new).
