Sauternes - Chateau d'Yquem 1919
The estate
Yquem remains, and will remain, the greatest and most famous sweet wine in the world. For a hundred years, this unique Premier Cru Classé Supérieur has stood apart from other Bordeaux wines through its exemplary consistency, even in lesser vintages and difficult periods. Under the direction of Pierre Lurton, who also heads Cheval Blanc, the estate has produced only great masterpieces for around ten years, more than ever deserving its status as a legendary wine. The distinctive quality of Yquem comes from its unique terroir. Here, botrytis develops as nowhere else, producing absolutely wonderful Sauternes, with controlled sumptuousness and incredible aging potential that put it far ahead of all its neighbors. Yes, Yquem is a legend in its own right, and yes, the prices are high. But Yquem is pure excellence: no lover of sweet wines should miss the chance to taste it at least once in their life…
