Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru - Domaine Bonneau du Martray 2000
The estate
Situated on the heights of Pernand-Vergelesses, at the foot of the Corton hill, the Domaine Bonneau du Martray is an emblematic property of Burgundy, recognized for its exclusive commitment to Grands Crus. This rare requirement makes it one of the only estates in Burgundy to produce only wines from this prestigious classification.
Producing exclusively two wines – a white from Corton-Charlemagne and a red from Corton – the Domaine Bonneau du Martray offers a rare and sincere expression of the Corton hill. Each of its wines is the culmination of patient, respectful, and precise work, designed to stand the test of time.
A story rooted in time
The origins of the vineyard date back to the time of Charlemagne, when Benedictine monks were already cultivating these lands. After the French Revolution, the Bonneau-Véry family took over the vines, initiating a lineage of transmission that would lead to the creation of the estate as we know it today. Since 2017, the estate has been in the hands of Stan Kroenke, also the owner of the Screaming Eagle estate in California, bringing with him an ambitious vision and a deep respect for the terroir.
A unique terroir serving two grand crus
The Domaine Bonneau du Martray extends over approximately 11 hectares, exclusively located on Grand Cru classified plots:
- Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Chardonnay), for about 9.5 hectares
- Corton Grand Cru (Pinot Noir), on just over 1.5 hectares.
These plots form a true natural amphitheater with varied exposures and soils, offering remarkable complexity to each cuvée. The estate's Corton-Charlemagne is thus recognized for its unique balance between power, tension, and mineral purity.
A demanding and responsible viticulture
Conducted in biodynamics, the estate places respect for living things at the heart of its approach. Vineyard interventions are guided by natural rhythms, yields are intentionally low, and harvesting is done entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting.
In the cellar, each plot is vinified separately. The aging, carried out in oak barrels with a limited proportion of new wood, reveals the personality of each vintage without ever masking the terroir. The blends are made with precision, and bottling respects lunar cycles.
Innovation & transmission
While tradition is at the heart of the estate's identity, it is accompanied by a constant desire for innovation: complete traceability of bottles via an electronic chip integrated into the label, occasional collaboration with the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and a high-level technical team dedicated to the pursuit of excellence.

Tasting: "The best wine I have ever tasted from this famous estate... rich nose of ripe pears, buttery hazelnuts, and minerality. Soft, intense, satin texture with exceptional balance, refinement, and a finish of astonishing length. Toast, spices, pear, and ripe apple reveal themselves in its complex profile." - Robert Parker – Wine Advocate (Pierre Rovani, April 2003) |
