Gantenbein Chardonnay - Weingut Daniel & Marta 2023
The estate
On the edge of the village of Fläsch, in the Rhine Valley, stands a remarkable set of buildings amidst the vineyards: the Gantenbein winery, where Martha and Daniel Gantenbein have been producing wine since 1982. They knew from the start that the vine was key, and thus planted Burgundian clones in their vineyards. They learned that it is vital for the grape to maintain its quality throughout its journey from vine to bottle and have structured their production accordingly. The flow of grapes and juice is based on the force of gravity, meaning that neither pumps nor filters are necessary. An area of 12.5 acres - and thus the largest part - is dedicated to Pinot Noir. Chardonnay is grown on 2.5 acres while Riesling covers an area of 0.5 acres. The "Gantenbein" is only available through a small network of wine distributors - worldwide.

Tasting: a bright lemon color, a clear, deep and intense bouquet, yet refined and fascinating, inviting, with aromas of chalk, flint, ripe lemon juice and zest intertwined with spicy and refreshing phenols. On the palate, it is a dense, rich and intense Chardonnay, yet elegant, lively, lemony, fresh and vibrant with limestone, structured by a very stimulating mix of crushed salts and very fine, refreshing tannins. The finish is intense and elegant, intertwining chalky and lemony flavors with very fine tannins and an irresistible charm. |
