Clos de Vougeot - Rene Engel 1994

The domain

It was in 2006 that François Pinault (owner of Château Latour and Château Grillet) acquired the René Engel estate, which he renamed Domaine Eugénie from a 0.5 hectare plot that the estate owns: the Clos d'Eugénie. Frédéric Engerer (also at the head of Latour) supervises production there and prohibits chemical weedkillers. The parcel, with an area of 6.5 hectares, is made up of vines in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Flagey-Echezeaux. In 2010, Clos d'Eugénie and Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru began their conversion to biodynamics, which should eventually concern the entire estate. As usual, François Pinault has acquired an exceptional estate. Throughout its history, the estate has remained incredibly modest in size but highly sought after by enthusiasts. Professor of oenology for 35 years at the University of Dijon, René Engel was one of the great figures of pre-war wine-growing Burgundy, one of the founders of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. His son Philippe Engel had taken over from his father in 1981 and had brought the estate among the best in Vosne-Romanée by taking drastic measures from 1982, but he died accidentally in 2004.
