Pauillac - Château Mouton Rothschild 2001

The estate

Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the three first classified growths located in the municipality of Pauillac. It produces one of the most prestigious Bordeaux wines, which bears the same name. It shares this rare distinction with Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and Château Haut-Brion.

Mouton-Rothschild has been owned by the English branch of the Rothschild family since 1853. It is the only growth that was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973 by the Ministry of Agriculture. Following this, the motto of the Château was changed from "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis" to "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

It was in 1922 that the young Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the helm of the Château. A pioneer, he decided in 1924 to carry out the bottling entirely on the estate, whereas at the time the wine was sold in bulk to various merchants in the Bordeaux market who bottled it themselves. He also asked the illustrator Carlu to create a label for his wine.
