Saint-Émilion Grand Cru - Château Pavie Macquin 2001

The Estate

The Château Pavie Macquin was founded in the 19th century by Albert Macquin, the man who introduced grafted plants in France to save the country's vineyards from destruction caused by phylloxera. Today, the château is still owned by the descendants of Albert Macquin. This Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion is an essential reference of the appellation and ranks among the greatest wines in the world.

A reference among the great wines of Saint-Émilion, Château Pavie Macquin oversees a vineyard of 14.5 hectares, of which 12.88 hectares are in production. The vines, averaging 35 years old, are planted on a clay-limestone terroir within the plateau of limestone rocks with asterias of the appellation.

Gravity-fed whole berry fermentation followed by parcel vinification in concrete tanks. Aging on fine lees for 16 to 20 months in barrels (of which 50% are new and 50% are from a previous wine) with a first racking after 6 to 10 months of aging, then a second one a year later, before bottling.

Format: 75 cl

Country: France

Region: Bordeaux

Cultivation: Sustainable agriculture

Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting: always this inimitable style at the aromatic level with a very beautiful fruit maturity intertwined with explosive floral notes. The palate reveals a fleshy, caressing texture, and a structure that is quite firm yet nuanced and without harshness. Very long, sapid finish for this wine, which once again represents one of the great successes not only of the estate but of the appellation.
