Grands Echezeaux - Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1987

The estate

L'evocation of the name Romanée-Conti is enough to make any wine lover around the world shiver with excitement. In 1760, Prince Louis-François de Bourbon-Conti bought a plot in Vosne-Romanée, planted by the priors of Saint-Vivant, before dying in 1776. It was confiscated during the Revolution and then sold to the highest bidder in 1794. The 1.8-hectare plot was then renamed Romanée-Conti. It would give its name to Burgundy's most prestigious estate.

In 1879, Jacques-Marie Duvault Blochet bought this estate. Today, Henry-Frédéric Roch, Lalou Bize-Leroy, and its director, Aubert de Villaine, own it. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) has 25 hectares of vineyards in Vosne, mainly among the village's grand crus: La Tâche, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg, Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux and, of course, Romanée-Conti. In the Côte de Beaune, the estate recently acquired the leasehold operation of three plots in Corton, in addition to its legendary Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet vineyards (with a limited production that is not sold commercially).
Although Romanée-Conti draws all the attention, the estate's other grand crus are impeccable, thanks to the work carried out both in the vineyard (farmed biodynamically) and in the winery (where whole-cluster vinification is practiced). Yields are extremely low, and some wines, such as Montrachet, are not produced every year due to insufficient quantities (as was the case in 1992 and 2016). Its price is, of course, commensurate with its legendary status.
