Masseto - Masseto Toscana IGT 1990

The estate

The first wine produced at the Masseto vineyard was the 1986 vintage. It was simply called "Merlot". The name Masseto then appeared on the label with the 1987 vintage.

Masseto is a highly complex wine with remarkable, refined structure. A unique testament to the unique alliance of terroir, climate and human talent that defines Masseto, as well as an inspiring proof of Masseto’s timeless value.

In the early 1980s, the first vines were planted on the west-facing clay soils of the Masseto hill, with geological studies indicating that this site could be special. The disagreements between renowned oenologist André Tchelistcheff and the founder over planting Merlot instead of the safer choice of Cabernet Sauvignon are legendary.

From the very first harvests, the unique character of the wines from this vineyard, planted along a vein of blue Pliocene clay, was clear during tastings. More than 30 years have passed since those first steps. Since Masseto’s creation, a very rigorous selection of the grapes has always been prioritized to ensure the best possible quality.

“Masseto” comes from a single vineyard: just six hectares, where passion and dedication come together with talent and expertise to create the highest standard of excellence, the result of an obsession with detail and a terroir devoted to vine cultivation.
