Meursault Les Vireuils - Domaine Roulot 2017

The domain

Domaine Roulot, founded by Guillaume Roulot in 1830, is a highly respected estate based in Meursault that produces primarily Chardonnay wines from a range of premier cru and village sites across the appellation. The wines are held in high esteem by critics and are highly sought after. The estate is currently run by actor-turned-winemaker Jean-Marc Roulot.

Roulot owns numerous properties in the premier crus of Meursault, including 0.28 hectares in Charmes, 0.26 hectares in Perrières and 0.16 hectares in Les Bouchères, as well as 0.2 hectares in the neighboring premier cru of Monthélie, Les Fulliots fields.

Another four hectares cover village vineyards in Meusault such as Les Luchets and Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir – a wine strongly associated with the Roulot label.

All wines are Chardonnay-based, although the estate also produces Aligoté, Bourgogne Blanc et Rouge, Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru, and a village red. The red wines are made from Pinot Noir, the main red grape variety in Burgundy.

Domaine Roulot established itself in the upper echelon of white Burgundy producers under the leadership of the late Guy Roulot. Guy was one of the first producers in the region to separately bottle individual vineyards, including village lieu-dits.

He died in 1982 and his son Jean-Marc took over in 1989, cultivating the vineyards organically.

Besides wine production, Jean-Marc Roulot is also known for his film appearances (he first studied cinema in Paris), notably the Burgundy film Ce qui nous bind (released under the title "Back to Burgundy" for the English-speaking audience), part of which was filmed at the estate.
