The estate

Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the three first growths located in the municipality of Pauillac. It produces one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious wines, which bears the same name. It shares this rare distinction with Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and Château Haut-Brion.

Mouton-Rothschild has been owned by the English branch of the Rothschild family since 1853. It is the only estate to have been promoted to the rank of “Premier Grand Cru Classé” in 1973 by the Ministry of Agriculture. Following this, the Château’s motto was changed from “First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton I am” to “First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.”

In 1922, the young Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the Château. A pioneer, in 1924 he decided to bottle the wine entirely at the estate, whereas at the time the wine was sold in bulk to various négociants in Bordeaux, who bottled it themselves. He also asked illustrator Carlu to create a label for his wine.
