Pauillac - Château Mouton Rothschild 1987 Magnum

The estate

The Château Mouton-Rothschild is one of the three first growths located in the municipality of Pauillac. It produces one of the most prestigious Bordeaux wines, which bears the same name. It shares this rare distinction with Château Margaux, Château Latour, Château Lafite Rothschild, and Château Haut-Brion.

Mouton-Rothschild has been owned by the English branch of the Rothschild family since 1853. It is the only estate that was promoted to the rank of "Premier Grand cru classé" in 1973 by the Ministry of Agriculture. Following this, the motto of the Château was changed from "Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis" to "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

It was in 1922 that the young Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the Château. A pioneer, he decided in 1924 to carry out the bottling entirely on the estate, whereas at the time the wine was sold in bulk to various merchants in the Bordeaux market who bottled it themselves. He also asked the illustrator Carlu to create a label for his wine.

Format: 150cl (Magnum)

Country: France

Region: Bordeaux

Cultivation: conventional

Tribute to Baron Philippe for his 65th and final harvest. A great Pauillac in a classic style.

Tasting: beautiful color, dark red with an orange rim.
The nose presents a beautiful range of aromas, blending notes of underbrush and leather with still prominent fruity notes of blackberry, licorice, and black cherry.
The mouthfeel is round and elegant, without being very powerful, combining notes of roasting, vanilla, caramel, and coffee with a very soft tannic structure, perfectly enveloped.
The finish is harmonious, fresh, and of good length; it asserts itself with character and a certain charm in a vintage considered rather delicate.
