Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg - Clos Rougeard 2016
The domain
In the 17th century, Clos Rougeard was born on the lands of Chacé, a village established not far from Saumur. The “Foucault brothers”, Charly (Jean-Louis, who died in 2015) and Nady (Bernard), embodied the last of the eight generations of the family. They were pioneers of organic farming right from the start, refusing to give in to the sirens of synthetic products and thus gradually inspiring other winegrowers.
Since 2017, the Bouygues family has owned this impenetrable estate and these legendary wines, real gems located in Saumur-Champigny. Today, the estate finds its balance thanks to Richard, the vine enthusiast, and Jacques-Antoine, the wine craftsman. A duo who, with the team, work to perpetuate the excellence and uniqueness of wines whose depth, finesse and precision are unparalleled.
Its 11-hectare vineyard, spread over 20 plots, mainly extends over clay and limestone soils. At the heart of this terroir, so respectful of its microfauna and microflora, the purest grapes are expressed, produced in organic farming for eight generations. Evidenced by the quality of its very old vines, some a hundred years old, which have never seen the slightest chemical product.
At Clos Rougeard, the wines evolve and refine over time. The excellence, finesse and depth of these wines are provided by aging for more than two years in barrels and aging at maturity for several years in the heart of the tufa cellars, 7 meters deep.
