The estate

It was in 1864 that Eloy Lecanda founded the mythical Bodegas Vega Sicilia, which alone symbolizes the golden legend of Spanish red wine. Throughout its long history, the house has belonged to different owners, but its undeniable personality and elegance have endured through decades and centuries to forge one of the most exclusive legendary wines of Spain: the Unico. Acquired in 1982 by the Alvarez Mezquiriz family, the estate underwent a policy of harmonizing techniques based on both innovative processes and traditional winemaking. Since 1982, the vineyard has been expanded and the vines over 100 years old have been gradually replanted.

Mainly spread over the territory of Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, the property of Bodegas Vega Sicilia spans more than 1000 hectares, of which 210 hectares are dedicated among others to wine production, including 40 for the famous Unico. Among the grape varieties planted, 80% of the vineyard is devoted to tinto fino, an indigenous grape, and to Ribera's tempranillo. The remaining 20% consists of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and malbec. Since 1991, Bodegas Vega Sicilia has expanded its influence and now owns other recognized estates in the Iberian Peninsula such as Alion, a neighbor of Vega Sicilia, which produces more "modern" wines, and Pintia in the Toro region.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia continues its expansion, as since 1993, it has owned and produced Tokaji on the Oremus estate in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region, located in northeastern Hungary.
